Tiger Woods at the crossroads for not able to qualify in the concluding events of the season
Tiger Woods is now facing the embarrassing scenario of not being able to qualify for any of the high profile events in his career for the first time in more than a decade-long reign.
Woods fell for the worst performance in any major event of his career last week when he failed to make the cut at 93rd PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. He made his first appearance after a pause of 11 weeks at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational
but failed to impress the crowd in his four day engagement on the course.
World Golf Championship is one of the elite council of the sport which manages four title events throughout the PGA Tour calendar and has a tough criteria for players to qualify in the events. Starting off in February with WGC Accenture Match Play Championship
in Tucson, Arizona, WGC overlooks three more events for the rest of the season including the WGC Cadillac Championship, WGC Bridgestone Invitational and the season finale the WGC HSBC Championship in November.
Woods will now be needing to post a victory or will need to climb up to the top-25 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) in order to reserve a berth at the event.
Woods has won for a record 16 times on the WGC events in his professional career, more than any other player in the sport. He has won one event every year starting from 1999-2009 and has won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational for a whopping seven times alone.
And although he has missed a couple of the events on the WGC schedule in wake of injuries, he never failed to qualify for any of them.
In fact for Woods, qualifying for any of the international events anywhere in world had never been a problem. His current winless streak has now lingered into the third year after his last victory in 2009 and the former world number one has now dropped to
number 33 on the OWGR.
Woods needed a strong finish at the PGA Championship to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs but an embarrassing finish has wiped out all possibilities to make it into the field of the $10-million event. He is now leaning on his paid appearance at the Australian
Open and will be hoping to be picked up by Fred Couples for the President’s Cup later in the year, which also highly unlikely in wake. Couples will have to make a level-headed decision to opt for the other young players on the tour who have done well in the
season.
Most of the players will be hoping to barge into the Top-125 in order to qualify for the Playoffs and many of the top ranking players are lurking down the list for the moment. Barclays Championship is first event of the four FedExCup Playoffs culminating
at the Tour Championship by Coca Cola in September.
Matt Kuchar is the defending champion of The Barclays and will be hoping to retain the title he won last year.
