Tiger Woods breaks course record in a practice round ahead of the Frys.com Open – Golf news
Although the legendary Tiger Woods might have fallen out of the top-50 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), rumours have revved up that the former World Number One has surprisingly struck form in his one-month off course practice sessions. The 35-year-old
Woods shot a 62 at his new private club, the Medalist Golf Club in Jupiter Island, a new course record on a Greg Norman designed course.
The low of 62 will definitely work as a booster shot for the 14-major-winner who is desperately searching for his previous glorious form. Woods will be playing at next week’s Frys.com Open on the PGA Tour and will be returning after a break of almost one
month. He was not able to qualify for the FedExCup Playoff Championship because of his receded position on the FedExCup points table.
This is also the first time in the last 15 years that Woods has fallen out of the top-50 on the OWGR. The ratings were updated on Monday, October 3, after Kevin Na’s stellar victory at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals Open and Michael Hoey’s victory
at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on European Tour. The current slide in the rankings poses an embarrassing situation for Woods, who probably will have to resort to qualifying rounds to get into some high-profile events on the tour.
Woods’ amazing round of 62 has also strange timings as the President’s Cup Captain of the International team recently predicted that Woods will not be able to win another major in his career, let alone taking over Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18-major titles.
Interesting is the fact that Woods shot the round at a course which is designed by Norman himself, perhaps sending him a message that, ‘I might be down, but I am surely not out’. Woods is among the players in the 12-member American team who will contest at
the President’s Cup, scheduled to be held in November.
According to PGA Tour statistics, the sport has suffered a downslide of considerable strength this year as Woods did not participate in many of the high-profile events on the calendar, severely affecting the financial outcome of the tour. Earlier in the
year, Woods suffered a ligament injury in his left knee at the Players Championship (TPC Sawgrass) and went into a rehab of 12 weeks before returning to mainstream golf.
Woods qualified to be part of the team at the President’s Cup, primarily on Captain Fred Couples’ personnel recommendation. Couples, who has been an old associate of Woods, decided to throw his weight behind the former World Number One and had to face scathing
criticism for his choice. He picked up Bill Haas last week for the last empty berth on the team, after Haas pulled in a remarkable victory on the final leg of the FedExCup Playoff Championship, the Tour Championship presented by Coca Cola.
