Tiger Woods comes good in Ryder Cup
The first day of the Ryder Cup really quietened the raging European fans at Celtic Manor on Friday October 1st. The opening the Europeans thought was good enough was strained by the comeback the Americans had.
After a long time, Tiger Woods played as if he really is the World number one. Even though the weather conditions weren’t the most favourable ones for Woods, he still managed to play some good golf.
Woods took four shots to even reach the first green, which was 465-yards away and normally flexible with a drive and a short iron. Then, Tiger shot with the ball going left of the bunker. However, he only ended with driving the ball 30 yards further. When
Woods was finally on the green, Ross Fisher was already strategizing a putt that would put him and Ian Poulter one up.
Tiger attempted a comeback at this by carding an amazing birdie. However, his efforts served futile when Poulter swung a 30-footer and hence the Europeans were leading again at the third.
Looking at the form Woods has been in since last November, his first performance at the Ryder Cup wasn’t that bad. The last tournament he had won was last year. After November, Woods really got tangled in his personal problems. The only person to blame is
Woods himself since the root of the problems is the extra marital affairs Woods had.
Even though the couple tried counselling and other methods, Tiger Woods and his ex-wife Elin Nordergren got divorced in August. Being used to Elin being there in every Ryder Cup, Woods would surely be very depressed. The bachelor was riding solo in the Ryder
Cup dinner as well where all the players and the captains were accompanied with their wives or girlfriends.
Due to his performance, Woods has also jeopardized his number 1 spot many times. Phil Mickelson and European Lee Westwood are in tight competition to take over and be the World’s number one golfer. Woods therefore, should really make use of this Ryder Cup
and play to the best of his ability.
Right now, the Americans are the stronger side in the Ryder Cup. This was all thanks to Stewart Cink, who carded five birdies as him and Matt Kuchar finished the day two ahead of Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. His monster birdies at the 3rd,
5th, 7th and 10th holes were really something that the Americans needed.
The United States team captain, Corey Pavin appreciated Cink’s long putts and commented, “that’s how one does well in the Ryder Cup”. He hopes that the other players are aware of this as well.
Whereas Cink made the US team proud, an un-official team member really disappointed the Americans. It was none other than the captain-ess, Lisa Pavin. As she was the mastermind behind the attire of the team, the rain suits the team wore were of no good.
The uniform no doubt was appealing but the rain suits were hideous. The team was water-logged after two hours of play and had to search the merchandise tent for new ones.
When the action resumes today, the opening foursomes will play. The second session which is now planned for Saturday is increased from four to six foursome matches. The third session will consist of four four-balls and two foursomes later in the day. 12
singles are scheduled for Sunday.
The weather in Wales has somewhat disturbed the schedule of the huge event and if there is no result by Sunday, it will be extended into Monday. This would be something never done before in the 83-year old history of the tournament.
Captain Colin Montgomerie, thinks that the new schedule is going to be difficult but he also believes that it could help the team. "I think I have more of a foursomes team than a fourball team. I am very confident and remain so", he reflected.
On the first day, even with bad weather, a huge crowd stayed and cheered on the teams. With such a high spirited audience, no wonder the players didn’t back down either. Hopefully, Mother Nature will let the second day continue as planned and it will soon
be clear on who will take the Ryder Cup home.
