Tiger Woods commits to the PGA Championship
Tiger Woods will feature in the PGA Championship, which will take place at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Johns Creek, Georgia Atlanta starting from August 11 to 14, 2011. The tournament is the last major of the season and Woods has the honour of winning it
four times.
The news was confirmed by his agent Mark Steinberg in an interview held on Friday, as well by Woods himself via his official website.
Woods wrote, “I’m excited to get back out there.”
Meanwhile, Steinberg elaborated the statement made by Woods and said that the 35-year-old will compete in the PGA Championship, provided, he does not experience any physical injury during or before the event. He also laid the condition of his appearance
at the Bridgestone Invitation as viable.
Woods announced his appearance at the Bridgestone Invitational last week and he said that he was fit enough to compete in the tournament.
The 14-major winner has been absent from competitive golf for eleven weeks, owing to his knee injury, which he incurred at the third round of Masters. The veteran strained his left knee and eventually twitched his ankle. The same injury forced him to withdraw
from the Players Championship, US Open and the Open Championship.
However, now things are slightly better and Woods believes he can start practicing and eventually feature in the 4-day event. According to his agent, he has consulted his physicians and they have allowed him to play.
The timing of his comeback seems perfect as Woods now has a chance to climb up the rankings once again. Had the player missed the PGA Championship, he would’ve most certainly dropped out of the Top 30 of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR). Woods is
currently sitting on the 21st spot.
Another interesting highlight of the tournament will be Woods’ new caddie. The veteran announced his split with Steve Williams on July 20, after the final round of AT&T National. The duo had worked together for 12 years and won 13 majors during this time.
