Tiger Woods confirms his return to Australian Open
In what turned out to be a great news for fans of the sport in Australia, Tiger Woods and Australian PGA chief executive, Brian Thorburn have confirmed Woods’ participation in the Australian Open. The event will take place at The Lakes from November 10 to
13, 2011.
“I'm very excited to be competing in the Australian Open. I have a great affinity for playing golf in Australia and I'm looking forward to competing against an outstanding field at The Lakes,” said Woods regarding his participation in the event.
The 35-year-old has not been to the venue for the last fifteen years, since he turned pro. Despite being new to the course, the player finished in fifth place back then. Woods returned to Australia last season in the Australian Masters, where he finished
in the fourth place.
The player will also take part in the President’s Cup, which will take place between the US and International teams in Melbourne from November 14 to 20, and the Australian PGA at Coolum from November 24 to 27.
While making an announcement regarding Woods’ appearance in the event, Brian Thorburn said that golf fans in Australia were up for a big threat.
“We know there are a lot of Presidents Cup players wanting to play in our PGA Tour of Australasia events and we expect there will be plenty more announcements in the coming weeks,” said Thorburn.
Woods has been out of competitive golf for almost 12 weeks now. The player pulled out of the Masters after aggravating his Achilles tendon and has ever since been on the sidelines. He has also missed two majors of the season; the US Open and the Open Championship.
As a result of his absence from these events, Woods has now dropped in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) to number 28. That might be a reason Woods decided to register himself for the WGC Bridgestone International, which will take place in Ohio, followed
by the PGA Championship.
However, on his return to competitive golf, the 14-major winner will be facing a tough competition from the likes of Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Geoff Ogilvy, Greg Norman and Fred Couples.
