Tiger Woods congratulates Rory McIlroy over his triumph at US Open
Tiger Woods congratulated Rory McIlroy over his win at the US Open, which took place at the par-71 Congressional Country Club in Maryland. The former world number one wrote on his twitter account, “Congrats to Rory...What a performance
from start to finish. Enjoy the win. Well done.”
McIlroy, who became an icon of flukes and dejection in the 2010 Masters, made a huge comeback and proved himself as an outstanding golfer. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman led the Masters until the final round. However, he fired
a round of 8-over par 80 and lost the chance of wearing a green jacket.
Dejected by the sudden change of fate, the rookie competed in the Valero Texas Open and met the same end. However, on Sunday, he amassed four birdies against two bogeys to produce a score of two-under par 69. The final round score
was not big itself, but its addition to the aggregate pumped up the number and turned it into 16-under par, which is by far the highest number attained at Congressional.
McIlroy became the first player in the history of the four-day event to post an aggregate of more than 13-under par. In addition to that, his two-day score of 11-under par set another record and made him the only player to sign
for the lowest double-digit figure in two rounds. Before McIlroy, Rickie Barnes held this record.
Interestingly, it is not Barnes whose record has been broken, as included in the list is Woods himself. Woods posted an aggregate of 12-under par in four rounds at the tournament eleven years back. Looking at the big achievement
of the rookie, Woods showered his appreciation on him and told the press in an interview that he followed his game throughout the week and enjoyed it.
Woods might have had his chance on the US Open trophy, which he has won thrice before, provided he would have been physically fit. The 35-year-old veteran suffers from a knee injury, which he attained during the fourth round of
the Masters and hence, had to pull out of the US Open.
