Tiger Woods doubtful about his appearance in the Open Championship
To add further misery to the lingering vows of Tiger Woods, the 14-major winner is not sure whether he will be part of the field at the upcoming third major of the season, The Open Championship at Sandwich.
Touted as one of the most celebrated players in the history of the sport, Woods has been battering with a sore left knee and an Achilles injury since his first round withdrawal from the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass last month. He was seen limping
off the course after just playing nine holes.
The injury, which was further aggravated at the Players Championship, first made headlines after his Masters bid fell apart. He was later seen wearing a surgical support around his knee and many of the big guns of the sport were more concerned about his
health than his deteriorating game.
On Tuesday, June 28, a new Woods emerged at the Aronimink Golf Club, the venue of AT&T National. He walked as if nothing was wrong with his knee or the Achilles and supported a trendy jaw-line beard.
“Probably in retrospect, it was a borderline call in playing The Players. I made the call on that to play and wasn’t quite 100 percent, and unfortunately I hurt myself there,” said Woods.
Woods was present at the inauguration ceremony and the proceeding practice rounds as a host of the tournament and talked about much of his future plans. The player also tipped about his possible withdrawal from the Open Championship, scheduled from July
10.
“I will come back when I'm 100%. I don't know when that's going to be,” he said. “I've not hit any balls yet. I want to be out there playing, but I'm not ready yet. There's not going to be a 50-50 call this time. I would not go over there (to the Open) to
show. I would go to win the tournament.”
Woods was reportedly pushed to participate in the Players Championship by the organizers, an allegation both Woods and the Players Championship organizers vociferously denied. The damaged ligament in his left knee has already been operated four times previously
and was even reconstructed in one of the operations.
