Tiger Wood’s earnings suffer a setback in 2010 - PGA update
The former World Number one, Tiger Woods, is enduring the worst spat in his career, both in terms of fame and fortune. It has been more than 15 months since the most celebrated golfer in the world recorded his last win in November 2009 during the JBWere
Masters, held at Kingston Heath in Melbourne, Australia. It was recently reported that Woods suffered a colossal loss of $48 million when compared to his earnings the previous year. Woods earned a staggering $122 million in 2009, combining his total earnings
in terms of his prize wins and the sponsorships from different brands. His career and earnings went into a downward spiral after the infamous accident in front of his Florida residence and his subsequent confessions about his extramarital affairs. In 2010,
his total earnings were estimated at $ 74.2 million.
Woods is now without a victory on the course for more than a year and the recent Dubai spitting incident in the Dubai Golf Classic, further pushed his career into turmoil. He not only lost the Dubai Classic but also suffered a first round exit in the WGC
Accenture Match Play Championship. He has now dropped down to world number five, trailing behind Martin Kaymer, lee WestWood, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell.
The 36-year-old golfer took the biggest hit away from the golf course, when his prime sponsors Accenture, US telecom company AT&T and Gatorade, dropped him in less than a week’s time when his scandals were made public. Gillette also announced that it would
not be renewing its sponsorship for another long-term contract.
Woods, however, has always been discrete about his financial matters until last week when his spokesman Mark Steinberg, hinted the newsmen about a possible reduction of his client’s endorsements. There has also been news circulating in the media about a
new sponsorship tag of an Asian car manufacturer, which will be seen on Woods bag, along with the existing sponsors, Nike and video game company EA Sports.
Among other top earners of the game, Phil Mickelson, was reported to be the second highest earner with $40 million followed by Englishman Lee Westwood with $14.7 million.
