Tiger Woods fails to break the par on first day of the Masters Tournament – Golf News
Tiger Woods finished the opening round of the Masters Tournament with two consecutive bogeys to disappoint his fans who were expecting a great start to his campaign for his 15th major title win.
Woods came to Augusta National after finishing his 30-month winning drought on the PGA Tour through a victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.
Therefore, he was expected to be outshining his opponents from the very first moment because of his huge experience on the venue.
However, he failed to come up to the hopes of his fans and followers as he finished five strokes behind the leader, Lee Westwood.
Woods finished his front nine with one-under on the scoreboard. A birdie on the 10th took him to two-under par for the round and he seemed to play a smooth game.
However, the two bogeys on the final holes caused him to finish at equal par. This was the first time since 2008 that he failed to break the par in the opening round of the Masters.
According to Woods, he hit the worst shots ever on Thursday and feels that he is reverting back to the mistakes that he recently recovered after working with his swing coach, Sean Foley.
Yet, he expressed his pleasure on the decent finish of 72, as the shots he was played could have caused him over-par score.
"It's alright. I just stayed very patient and in the moment. Fortunately that's about as good as I've got there. I could have shot one, maybe two better but I got a lot out of that round," he said.
Meanwhile, Westwood carded a five-under par 67 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Louis Oosthuizen and Peter Hanson.
"This is my 13th time here," Westwood said. "I've learnt the course and feel comfortable on it. That eradicates a lot of the tension. My ball-striking was very good -- it has been all year. Majors are my primary focus and this was a long time coming around
after the USPGA".
Ben Crane, Jason Dufner, Bubba Watson Paul Lawrie, Miguel Jimenez and Francesco Molinari carded three-under par sixty-nine to share the fourth spot on the leaderboard.
