Tiger Woods fails to emulate Jack Nicklaus at the Masters – Golf news
Former world number one Tiger Woods once again failed to emulate Jack Nicklaus’ record of six victories at the Masters as he finished in the fourth place on Sunday.
The four-time Masters champion teed off from the front and reeled two back-to-back birdies in the opening three holes sending a warning for leader Rory McIlroy.
He hit another powerful tee shot towards the green, but the ball missed the target and fell in the bunker. The 35-year-old recovered from his approach shot, but the ball missed the cup again, resulting in Woods’ first bogey of the day at the 4th.
Refusing to surrender to the pressure, Woods rekindled his magic with the driver and hit two fabulous tee shots on the sixth and seventh hole. The crowd cheered at the twin delight, but Woods had more to offer.
He walked towards the next tee and while the crowd was busy in yelling, “Hole it Tiger,” he managed to hit a massive tee shot right in the centre of the fairway. His approach shot from a long distance landed inside a couple of feet from the tournament and made his only eagle for the tournament.
Woods wrapped up the front nine with a 5-under par 31, which left him tied with the third round leader McIlroy.
Relying on his driver and wedges, Woods marched towards the back nine and hit the second shot towards the tenth green. It was another green in regulation, setting ground for a birdie, but Woods could not manage it and had to instead settle for a par.
Similar scenario was witnessed at the 12th green, where Woods missed the par-putt because of misreading the line. However, shortly afterwards, the veteran covered up the loss and marched towards the clubhouse with a score of 5-under par.
When asked how he felt about losing another opportunity of breaking Nicklaus’ record, Woods replied, “I hit it good all day. This entire weekend I hit it good. So that was a nice feeling.”
Woods was close to a victory but his opponents were too good on the final day. This victory would have brought him closer to Nicklaus’ record.
