Tiger Woods fails to qualify at East Lake
Tiger Woods has gone seven consecutive tournaments without making the top 10. This is the worst slump of his career, only comparable to a five-tournament slump he had back in 2001 before winning the Firestone Championship Tournament. To make matters worse, Woods has failed to qualify for the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake this weekend. He is rated as the top player in the world, but this seems to have changed.
When asked what happened in Atlanta this weekend Woods simply said, “I didn’t play well in the beginning of the year and I didn’t play well in the middle of the year.” He later commented that he was beginning to play well now, and experts disagree. Woods tied in 12th place at The Barclays, he tied for 11th place at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and he finished 17th overall at the BMW Championship. The numbers don’t lie.
Woods needed to shoot 65 in the final round of the BMW Championship and it took him until the 17th hole just to get under par for the final round. This is the first time in 15 years that Woods finished a PGA Tour season without a single title.
After a split with his swing coach Hank Haney in May, Woods spent the next three months going it alone. The results have been less than stellar. Let’s hope that this is just a temporary slump and that soon Tiger can find his game and reclaim his post atop the podium. In either case, no matter what his future holds, what we can say for sure about the here and now is that there will be a new FedEx champion this year.
