Tiger Woods falters in the final round of the Tour Championship
The former world number one Tiger Woods faltered in the final round of the Tour Championship and tied for the eighth position, on Sunday, September 23, 2012.
The 14-time major champion desperately needed a victory, in order to make it to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.
However, he failed to match the scores posted by Brandt Snedeker, who raised the trophy by winning the fourth leg of the PGA Tour Playoffs.
Snedeker recorded a 10-under par overall score and pocketed the $11.4 million cheque - $10 million for the top position in the FedEx Cup standings and $1.4 million for winning the tournament.
Woods started his final round campaign with a four-stroke deficit against the 54-hole leaders, Justin Rose and Snedeker.
On a difficult East Lake Golf Club, Woods only managed to record four birdies against four bogeys and a double bogey. Therefore, it was not enough to challenge Snedeker on top of the leaderboard.
According to him, he chipped and putted the ball well during the whole week. However, his ball striking was something that really needed improvements.
He stated that he will try to work out on his mistakes, heading into the Ryder Cup, scheduled to start from September 28, 2012.
He also said that the course conditions were really tough on the final day, and the heat factor had a huge impact on the players’ performances.
“It was tough today. It was blowing. Robert and I were talking about this today all day,” he said. “We were just shocked at how slow the greens were. They really put a lot of water on them last night with the cooler air and less humidity, they were probably
afraid that they might get a little bit away from them”.
Woods now plans to take complete rest on Monday, prior to heading to the Medinah Country Club, the venue course for this year’s Ryder Cup.
“It will be nice to shut it down tomorrow and gear up again because we've got a long, long week ahead of us. We're all going to need our energy and get our rest when we can,” he said.
