Tiger Woods finishes last in skins game in Thailand
After finishing a disappointing 12 shots behind eventual winner Francesco Molinari at the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, China, Tiger Woods hopped on a plane and headed for Bangkok,
Thailand, to participate in a four-man 18-hole skins game for charity on Monday 8 November. But his play wasn’t much better in Thailand, where he won only one skin, finishing last in the event.
Camillo Villegas of Colombia, who won the event in a chip-off on the 18th green, won the most money on the day, winning five skins for $109,800 at the World Golf Salutes King Bhumibol
Skins Tournament. Englishman Paul Casey won nine skins and $92,400 while local golfer Thongchai Jaidee won three skins for $90,000. Woods won only $6,600 for his one skin, which came on the fourth hole after he knocked a wedge shot to three feet at the Amata
Springs Club in the province of Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok.
In a skins game, winning more holes doesn't necessarily mean winning more money as early holes are typically worth less than holes later in the round.
When Woods hit his tee shot on the par-three 17th hole to five feet, he looked likely to win three skins and $90,000. But Jaidee responded with a shot to six feet, sinking the birdie putt
while Woods missed his on the left side of the cup.
Woods’ first visit to his mother's home country in 10 years was short-lived as he hopped a plane to Melbourne, Australia, soon after the event. He is getting ready to defend his Australian
Masters title, which begins on Thursday 11 November. The last time Woods came to Thailand, where he is adored, was when he won the Johnnie Walker Classic in 2000.
The event in Bangkok was part of festivities celebrating the 60th anniversary of Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej taking power. The total prize money of $900,000 was donated to a charity foundation
associated with Adulyadej.
When he failed to win in Shanghai, Woods suffered through his first winless season on the PGA Tour in 14 years.
"I just didn't put it together this year, I didn't play well; I had numerous opportunities to play well, and I just didn't do it,” Woods said after the HSBC. “I had my chances, it was
one of those years where I didn't put it together."
