Tiger Woods fires four-under to lead at East Lake after first round
There is something special that you would see with Tiger Woods. Cometh the big stage, and he will fire some low rounds, this is exactly what happened on Thursday.
The former world number one fired four under 66 to lead the Tour Championship after the first round at East Lake. Woods has been second best to Rory McIlroy in the last few weeks.
He stated his intent with a magnificent display of golf. Tiger knows that a victory would land in his third FedEx Cup title and a purse of $10 million.
Justin Rose of Britain shared the lead with Tiger after the first round, as he matched the American by shooting six birdies.
Woods, who was once again paired with Rory McIlroy, seemed to be in his comfort zone and he was not fazed at all with the Irishman’s recent success.
"I played well," Woods said. "It was a very consistent round. I hit the ball well, made a few putts, got around well".
The fourteen-time major winner scored six birdies in total but the two bogeys that he scored were pretty soft. Tiger Woods read the course really well and he made the right decisions at the right time.
"This course demands you flight the ball well," Woods said. "You try to keep the ball below the hole because these greens are really quick. I had a couple good up and downs. This wind wasn't so bad. I'm used to playing in it."
The ‘intimidator’ Rory McIlroy shot an average score of one-under but his eagle at the par 5, fifteenth hole was the highlight of the day.
Tiger hit the ball very sweetly, which is a really good sign. "It's nice to feel healthy enough to be able to clear 310 (yards) again like I used to."
Putting up a performance like this always cheers up the fans and is certainly a morale booster. Tiger, this season, has been playing excellent golf in the first few rounds but he slips away in the last round or so.
If Tiger wants to win more trophies and, particularly the majors, then he must become consistent throughout the four rounds.
