Tiger Woods gets into contention at the AT&T National after the second round
The 14-time major winner Tiger Woods came into contention at the AT&T National, following a three-under par 68 in the second round, to share the 11th position on Friday, June 29, 2012.
Woods started off on the back nine of the Congressional Country Club and parred the opening six holes, prior to making a long putt for an eagle on the 16th hole.
A couple of birdies against a lone bogey on the front nine allowed him to settle five strokes behind the pace set by Hunter Mahan, who carded a six-under par 65 for a seven-under par overall score.
At the end of the round, he told that he played like he was playing in the US Open because of the toughness of the course. According to him, the conditions were dry and the course was playing really quick.
Therefore, it was essential to make accurate calculations while making each shot to avoid bogey chances.
“It's playing like an Open, it really is,” he said. “It's quick, it's dry. At least the TOUR moved up a couple tees if the pins were in the corners or they were out in front”.
“They did a good job of getting it so that we can get aggressive and get down there to put the ball in the fairway, we could have a shot at pins. It was scorable, but definitely not easy”.
“Just trying to stay patient the whole day. That's why I train, that's why I run all those miles,” he added. “If you're carrying a little bit of body fat, it's going to be a little insulation out there”.
Woods is now aiming to maintain consistency in the remaining two rounds in order to challenge his rivals on top of the leaderboard.
The overnight leader Bo Van Pelt, Charley Hoffman and the winner of the last week’s Travelers Championship, Marc Leishman, were the other three players to join him on the leaderboard after carding two-over par, three-under par and one-under par scores, respectively.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Nick Watney carded a one-over par 72 to share the 19th position.
