Tiger Woods loses to Nick Watney in the second round of the Accenture Match Play Championship – Golf News
Former number one and three-time winner of the Accenture Match Play Championship, Tiger Woods, had to pack his bag after the second-round defeat against Nick Watney 2&1 at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, Marana, Arizona, on Thursday, February
23, 2012.
There came a chance for Woods to extend the game to an extra hole by making a birdie on par-four 18th.
However, his putting did not help him and he eventually missed a birdie-putt to lose by just one point.
"I hit the ball well all day. Unfortunately I just did not make enough putts to extend the match or even win the match," disappointed Woods said.
He continued, "I was fighting the blocks all day with my putter. The putter was going back a little bit shut, and subsequently I let it go and it goes left, and I block it right".
He added by saying that he did not miss a single shot throughout his game against Watney and he was pleased with his hits on the course. However, it was unfortunate to miss the putt when he actually needed it.
On the other hand, Nick Watney said that he was expecting the game to enter the playoffs.
Therefore, he had his yardage book and pin sheet turned to the first playoff hole and was getting ready to choose his clubs for the hole.
He went on to say that everybody present on the course was expecting Woods to make a birdie on his final hole, as he never misses such kind of shots.
However, it was shocking for all of his fans and spectators to watch him miss such an easy putt at a crucial point of the match.
"We don't see him miss putts like that very often. And there were a few of them. I don't think that this will be a day that either of us will look back on as far as putting goes. But I'm happy to move on," Watney said.
He will now face the top seeded player in the Sam Snead bracket, Lee Westwood, in the third round of the first World Golf Championship of the year.
