Tiger Woods makes the cut despite struggling with his putting in Honda Classic – Golf News
The former world number one, Tiger Woods, who again struggled with his putting in the 2012 Honda Classic, managed to score a two-under par 68 to register his name among the players who made the cut on Friday, March 2, 2012.
Woods kicked off his round on the back nine of the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and scored two birdies against a single bogey.
However, the par-three fifth hole saw him struggling, as he found a water hazard on his tee shot. Therefore, he had to finish the hole in five shots, levelling his round score to par.
"I got it going, lost it, got it going, lost it and then got it going," said Woods, who has missed just seven 36-hole cuts in his career, including three in the past four seasons. "It was a little bit of a fight today. Probably the worst I've hit the ball
in months".
That was a time when it seemed that Woods will be spending the weekend back at home, Jupiter Island, few miles away from the venue.
Still, he managed to score two back-to-back birdies on the final two holes he played and made the cut.
"I told Joey (caddie Joe LaCava) on the last couple holes, we go birdie-birdie, we'll be within seven," said Woods.
He went on, "And that's really doable on this golf course. The guys don't really go all that low, so we if we post one (Saturday), we'll be right back in it".
Meanwhile, Justin Rose and Tom Gillis were tied for the first place on the leaderboard after carding an eight-under par overall score.
Rory McIlroy, who shot a three-under par with the help of four birdies against one bogey, finished second, one stroke behind the leaders.
The overnight leader Davis Love III failed to impress his fans on the second day, as he finished two-over par 72 because of two bogeys, a double bogey against two birdies.
The highlight of the day was Brian Harman’s nine-under par that included eight birdies, an eagle against a lone bogey on par-four 12th. He finished tied for fifth on the leaderboard.
