Tiger Woods off to a decent start at The Open Championship – Golf news
Given the fact that Tiger Woods was suffering with some pain in his left elbow and the amount of game he has played in the past few weeks, a two-under par score in the opening round of The Open Championship was quite good and acceptable.
Woods started with a bogey on the first hole, courtesy of an unplayable lie, followed by two par putts and a birdie on the fourth hole. The sixth hole witnessed his chip shot rolling out of the green which forced him to suffer another blemish of the day.
After recording three straight par putts, the American reached the turn in one over. Thereafter, he picked up pace and birdied three of the first four holes on the back nine of the course, followed by a bogey and a birdie on the 14th and the 17th hole, respectively.
At the end of the day, he found himself trailing the first-round leader Zach Johnson by three strokes and hopes to catch him soon in the upcoming rounds.
“It was tough,” said Woods. “The golf course progressively got more dried out and more difficult as we played. And I'm very pleased to shoot anything even par or better.”
Talking about his injury, he also said that he did not feel anything because of the rest he chose to take before the start of the tournament.
According to him, a long break before the start of a major championship does not affect him much, as he has done it a number of times before in his career. He believes that remaining fit and healthy is more important that playing constantly and practicing
before a major.
“I've taken long breaks before, before major championships,” he said. “I've taken three and four weeks off and come back and played well.”
Woods has not been able to win a single major since his victory in the 2008 US Open. This year, he looks to end his major title drought, as he is currently enjoying a great form on the PGA Tour. He has won four events so far this season and surged back to
the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings.
