Tiger Woods off to a disappointing start at the Greenbrier Classic
Tiger Woods, the winner of last week’s AT&T National, faltered in the opening round of the Greenbrier Classic, to go one-over par 71. He stood tied for the 88th position at The Old White TPC, in White Sulphur Springs, on Thursday, July 5, 2012.
Woods is currently the only player on the PGA Tour to record three victories in the current season. Therefore, he entered the competition as a hot favourite for a win.
As a result, a huge crowd followed him on the course. However, the spectators looked disappointed at the end of the round, after watching their idol make silly mistakes on the course.
Woods started off strongly on the back nine and carded two consecutive birdies, starting from the 11th hole. Yet, he failed to maintain consistency and suffered one bogey and a double bogey to go one-over through till the 18th hole.
A couple of birdies against the same number of bogeys on the front nine forced him to settle eight strokes behind the pace set by Vijay Singh, who had a great day with his putter and carded a seven-under par 63.
According to Woods, he struggled with his game on the greens, as they were a bit slower compared to the past three courses he played on the PGA Tour.
“I just didn't quite have my game or didn't have the speed on the greens, too,” the 14-time major champion said. “So it was quite a big adjustment from playing my last three events for the green speeds, so I struggled with it a little bit”.
Woods also stated that the course was really easy to play on, should a player succeed in hitting the fairways as much as he can.
“You get the ball in the fairway here, you're going to have a lot of 9-iron on down and you can attack this golf course,” he said.
“I think most of the scores, most scores will probably at least 2-under par or better, and most of the guys can be pretty aggressive here”.
He now plans to overcome the mistakes he made on the opening day and post a good score while entering the weekend of his debut appearance in the event.
