Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, who is better?
One of the controversial debates concerning the golf world these days is determining who is better between Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
Jack Nicklaus, an American native and one of the greatest golfers of all time, used to play competitive golf during the 1960s through the 1980s.
Nicklaus and Woods, both have plenty of records to their name. So, are the numbers necessary for somebody to be the best?
It is certainly an important factor but it is not right to say that it is the only aspect to focus on.
Definitely, the records and the number of titles help define the character and resilience of the player, but it most definitely does not mean that it is the only thing that should be taken in consideration.
During the time Nicklaus used to play, his rivals were themselves charismatic and highly accomplished golfers as well.
It should be noted that Nicklaus achieved all that he has in the presence of other great players such as Arnold Palmer, Gary player and Billy Casper. The stiff competition that Nicklaus had to face from these golfers was something golf fans used to look
forward to.
For some, it was their rivalry that revived golf and players’ interest in the sport.
When Nicklaus used to enter the course with Palmer, Casper and other players, something exceptional was always expected on the fairways.
Defeating all the odds and overcoming the other golfers so convincingly gave Nicklaus all the attention during his time.
Tiger Woods is another golfer who has amazed the golfing arena with his talent. His extraordinary game has been appreciated by every golfer all around the globe.
When it is said that a player like Woods can be compared to Nicklaus, then for some, it comes as no big surprise. Some fans would regard Woods as the best golfer in the history of golf.
This fact is fairly debatable. However, before we jump to any conclusions, let us see what Woods has that Nicklaus does not.
Woods has won 14 major championships up till now and he still has a long way to go. He has plenty of golf left in him and hence the possibility of him beating Nicklaus’ record of most major wins has a high probability.
Then there is the dominance that Woods had when he was at his peak. He is still one of the best in the world, but the way Woods used to play, he never gave anyone else the chance to come on the top.
When Woods used to walk on the fairways, fans were sure of the fact that they were going to witness something exceptional.
All the achievements that Woods has and all that he has gained over the years, is definitely laudable. However, comparing him to Nicklaus is injustice to the Golden Bear. Nicklaus was a player with a vast variety in his game.
When he used to play, it was not an easy setting for the American due to the presence of other golfing giants.
To say that Nicklaus is a more accomplished and a better golfer than Woods is a correct statement.
I am not undermining the achievements of Woods or disregarding him as a golfer, he is certainly an exceptional player but Nicklaus will always stand out as the best golfer ever.
