Tiger Woods paired with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano in Accenture Match Play Championship – Golf News
The 14-time major winner, Tiger Woods, is paired with Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano for his opening match in the World Golf Championships - Accenture Match Play Championship, starting on Wednesday, February 22, 2012.
Tiger Woods, who saw his worst part of the career in the last two seasons, is currently seeded as 19 in the event.
This is the first time he did not manage to stand among the top three seeds in all the appearances that he made in the event.
However, he is still a favourite to win the event because of his recent performances in the tournaments that he played.
He has said that he cannot take anything for granted as anything can happen in the game of golf. “Anybody can win any match," Woods said. "Anybody can beat anybody at this level".
On the other hand, Castano is looking confident while preparing for the game to start at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, Arizona.
"I am the underdog, I have nothing to lose," the 31-year-old Spaniard said. "At the same time I don't think [Woods is] at his best. So it's a good opportunity. If I play well I can beat him".
When Woods was told about Castano’s comments, he replied by saying that he feels the same for him.
"Everyone has a hole, and that's kind of how I look at it, it's their prerogative, it's their opinion," Woods said.
Overall, Woods has an advantage over Castano as he has a proven track record on the PGA Tour and especially in the Match Play championship with 32-8 in 11 appearances.
Moreover, Castano has not been able to impress his fans yet as his best performance on the PGA Tour came in the 2009 PGA Championship where is finished tied for the 32nd.
Besides, he also missed the whole PGA Tour season last year because of the back injury he suffered early in the 2011.
Therefore, he will have to work really hard while playing against a man who ruled the world of golf for many years and is still in a good position to take his kingdom back with a few top finishes.
