Tiger Woods ready for the hunt at the Professional Golf Association’s Players Championship – PGA Tour
Tiger Woods has committed to play in the Professional Golf Association’s (PGA) Players Championship, taking place at the Players Stadium Course of Tournament Player Club Sawgrass from the 9th to 15th of May, 2011.
The news was confirmed by tour officials via the PGA tour website after Woods called them and later posted, “Looking forward to the competition ... just committed to The Players”, on his website.
Woods called the tour officials at 2 pm, three hours before the deadline, and told them that he was ready to take part in the tournament that carries a purse of $9.5 million.
Woods has never missed the cut in the tournament which is considered as the fifth flagship event of the tour. He has made 13 appearances at the venue, reckoned as the wildest queen of Florida, and never left the course with his head down.
Woods told the officials that he was looking forward to return to the course on which he made a 60 feet long chip on the 17th hole, ten years earlier.
The former world-number one could not emulate a similar performance ever since, but despite that, he is eager to return to the treacherous greens.
Last year, Woods had to withdraw from the tournament after making the cut, realizing that he had a neck injury which could have been fatal.
Woods has been facing fitness issues since the 2011 Masters.
The 35-year-old injured his left knee during the third round of the tournament. It was the same knee that went through surgery after the 2008 US Open.
Considering the various injuries, doctors suggested Woods to rest and avoid playing, which he did. Woods did not play in the Zurich Classic and the Wells Fargo Championship.
In light of Woods’ health issues, speculations started hitting the circuit about Woods not playing in the Players Championship. However, on Friday, Woods proved all such speculations false and confirmed his appearance in the tournament.
Players Championship started in 1974 in which Jack Nicklaus was the winner. In the 37-year history of the tournament, Woods won the tournament in 2001 after finishing at the second place in 2000. He has never finished lower than the top ten and once again, he is bidding to make a powerful comeback in the tournament.
