Tiger Woods recovering fast from his knee injury
Although there seems to be no good news for Tiger Woods these days, the latest set-back was him withdrawing from the Open Championship which is taking place at the St George Golf Club, the player came out and revealed that he is recovering from his knee injury at a decent pace.
The former world number one addressed a press conference at Philadelphia, where he was promoting the AT&T National, a Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event. The 35-year-old has been out of competitive golf for seven weeks now - ever since he took a withdrawal from the Players Championship -owing to the knee injury, which he incurred during the final round of the Masters.
During the press conference, the veteran said that he would return to the course only if he was fully satisfied with his fitness.
Woods said, “I'm going to come back when I'm 100 per cent... there's going to be no 50-50 call this time. I am going to learn my lesson from Sawgrass [where he withdrew after nine holes]. I tried to push it too hard and hurt myself and that's why I'm going to be different this time.”
While answering another question regarding his injury, the veteran said, “Every day it has gotten better. But still it's not as strong or as explosive as I'd like it to be.”
Woods has undergone soft tissue treatment and has been taking medication which, according to him, has relieved some pain. However, he will not be able to hit any balls in the upcoming championship, as he wants to avoid the recurrence of the injury. Which is why, he will not compete in the Open Championship, a tournament he has won thrice after turning pro in 1997.
This is the second time Woods is withdrawing from this tournament because of an injury. In 2008, Woods had to take the same decision after he underwent a surgery on his left leg.
Being out of yet another major tournament and falling out of Top 10 rankings, these are tough times for Woods. However, he is hopeful that he will be able to break the record of 18 majors set by Jack Nicklaus, although some think completely otherwise.
