Tiger Woods remains in contention at The Open Championship – Golf news
World number one Tiger Woods is in contention to claim his first major title in five years as he carded an even-par 71 on day two of The Open Championship and shared the second spot on the leaderboard, on Friday, July 19, 2012.
The third major golf championship of the season is being played at the Muirfield Golf Club, featuring a strong line-up contending each other for a major glory.
Considering the difficult playing conditions at Muirfield, Woods got off to a decent start, as he birdied two of the first five holes, while conceding a bogey on the fourth hole.
Thereafter, he lost some momentum and lost a couple of shots on the eighth and the 11th hole, before ending his second round campaign on a decent note by birdying the 18th.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, the American expressed his pleasure in remaining in contention for the top spot, entering into the last two rounds.
According to him, he remained patient throughout the day, which paid him off in the form of a good score in the end. He now plans to remain consistent and focus on his natural game on the weekend, in order to finish the event on top of the leaderboard.
“I'm in a good spot,” the 37 year old said. “I've just got to continue plodding along, continue just being patient, putting the ball in the right spots.”
“We're not going to get a lot of opportunities out there but when I have I've been able to capitalise and hopefully I can continue doing that,” he added. “I've been right there, I give myself chances. I've had chances on the back nine of many of those Sundays.”
He also said that he cannot win each and every major he participates in, however, he certainly can try to do it and contend strongly.
“I'm not going to win every Major I play in, but certainly I can try and put myself there,” he said.
Entering the third round, he is trailing the halfway leader Miguel Angel Jiménez of Spain, and sharing the second position with Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson.
