Tiger Wood’s resurrection could profit the industry
There is a famous saying, ‘there is always sunshine after the storm.’ With this year going downhill for Tiger Woods, many are wondering whether the 14 time major winner will see the sunny side in 2011. The yellow for Tiger could also bring good news to the
Industry as well. The networks and sponsors are pondering on how much to invest in Woods. Seeing how he is, his positive comeback could bring a lot of attention to the world of golf.
2010 was a horrible year for the golf legend Tiger Woods. Woods lost his wife, his respectable reputation and his number one ranking. The PGA is hoping that in 2011 Tiger will come back to life and leave this year of setbacks right behind him. A strong 2011
season is all he needs for people to take him seriously again. The US Tour television contract negotiators are discussing the ratings of the former world number one. The major opinion is that investing money in Wood’s 2011 season would be a smart move.
"The most dominating player in a sport in history, you want him playing because it makes a lot of things work a lot better," US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said."And we want him playing. We want him playing well and given his intensity, we assume that
will be the case."
The root cause of Tiger Wood’s downfall is none other than his own promiscuous behaviour. The news of the golf star’s infidelity came out last November when he crashed his car outside his Florida home. Tiger had been involved with many women including Rachel
Uchitel and was cheating on his wife. Wood’s s*x scandal obviously led to problems with his beautiful wife, Elin Nordegren. The couple tried counselling with Woods even being sent to rehab. Despite their efforts, things didn’t work out and they called it quits
in August. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren got divorced on August 23rd 2010.
Along with ruining his marriage, Tiger’s infidelity also affected his career. The last event that Woods won was the Australian Masters at Kingston Heath in 2009. Remaining winless in 2010, Woods posted his career worst at the Bridgestone Invitational. Tiger
posted an 18 over and finished 78th place in an 80 man field. This sort of performance was unexpected from a golf star such as Woods.
People who aren’t even into golf tune in to watch Tiger Woods to play. They all followed Woods in his journey of 71 titles which are just 11 less than Sam Snead’s all-time PGA record. Tiger is only four major titles short of Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18
titles. It is a big thrill for people to say whether Woods will beat these records or not. Even though he might have let some people down with his habits, his fans are still eager to see him rise from the ashes.
Woods is the kind of player that makes news by shooting record-setting scores or margins. His game has brought players to golf just like Mike Tyson’s boxing knockouts have. In the previous years, Tiger has helped hoist the USPGA TV contracts, sponsorship
and prize money. His first events after the scandal got global attention. His continued poor performance however caused viewers to lose interest as he wasn’t playing how he used to.
The PGA has had setbacks but it can’t be entirely being blamed on Tiger Woods. Finchem said the culprit is the economy. Giving figures, Tim said that in total there are 479 tournaments in PGA and Woods plays in 16. He said the problem is the economy and
not Tiger himself.
The 2011 PGA Season is bound to be an interesting one even though not many big names will be playing in it. The current world number one, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer who’s ranked third and Rory McIlroy will be just focusing on the European Tour. Finchem
said that having the world number one playing does arouse interest in the audience and not having him hurts, but all the operators of the Tour are carefully optimistic and looking to a great season ahead.
