Tiger Woods returns to the site of his only victory in 2011 – the World Challenge
The 14-time major champion Tiger Woods is relishing the opportunity to defend his title at the World Challenge presented by Northwestern Mutual, when the tournament kicks off this week in California.
The tournament will be played at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, featuring a total of 18 top-notch players from different parts of the world.
The 2012 FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, the reigning Masters champion Bubba Watson and the reigning US Open champion Webb Simpson are to name a few.
Last year, Woods succeeded in ending his two-year title drought with a victory in the 13th edition of the same tournament.
The victory played a key role in boosting his morale for the 2012 golf season that saw the American earning three PGA Tour victories.
Talking to the reporters, he said that he was struggling with health issues last year, and was not sure about how to develop momentum in his game.
At that time, the Chevron World Challenge – the former name of the event – provided him some hope, to make a strong comeback in the world of golf.
His two-year winning drought dragged him out of the top-50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings.
However, the resurging American turned the tables in his favour by tasting success at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Memorial tournament and the AT&T National.
As a result, he made a strong move in the rankings and surged to the second place in the standings. Last week, Luke Donald displaced him to the third position, after clinching a victory at the Japan Golf Tour’s Dunlop Phoenix tournament.
"I'm very excited because last year at this point in time I was still not quite where I wanted to be physically," he said.
"This year has been fantastic in that regard. I've felt good. I've played a full schedule for the first time in a very long time, and I'm just very pleased with what I've done overall with my game”.
He added, “At the outset of the year I didn't really putt well. Towards the end of the year I really started putting well. My short game has really come around ... I am becoming more consistent”.
