Tiger Woods rumoured to return for Greenbrier Classic on PGA Tour after the Open Championship
After his official approval of Notah Begay lll’s charity event, the NB3 Challenge on August 31, Tiger Woods is now rumoured to be playing at the Greenbrier Classic at the scenic West Virginia Resort.
While Bigay’s charity event which was delayed due to Woods’ lingering knee injury, is scheduled at the end of August, the Greenbrier Classic, however, is scheduled at the end of July and it would be interesting to see how the 14-major-winner would
make a comeback after a long pause.
“I’m excited and very appreciative to have these incredible golfers involved with this year’s event,” said Begay III in a release. “Having instantly recognized names like Tiger (Woods) and Annika (Sorenstam), as well as some of the sport’s established
and rising stars, draws a great deal of positive attention to the Foundation’s mission.”
Bigay lll is Woods compatriot and close friend since the times the duo met at Stanford almost two decades back. The NB3 Challenge which was scheduled right after the Players Championship earlier this year was cancelled due to Woods withdrawal owing
to severe knee injury in the first round at TPC Sawgrass. Begay rescheduled the event to suit Woods possible inclusion in the event.
But the news which has been making headlines since Thursday July 14 is Woods anticipated return to mainstream golf in the PGA event at the end of July. The Greenbrier Classic will be the destination of some of high profile golfers like Phil Mickelson
and Woods return will bring some good news to his fans who have been let down and demoralized for a long period of time. The organizers at the Greenbrier, however, declined to comment on the development.
“As for Tiger, we have not received a commitment from him. We would certainly love to have him join our already impressive field though,” said Lynn Swann, Director of Public Relations for the Greenbrier.
Woods agent will have to confirm his client’s participation as early as July 22 as per regulations of the PGA Tour and the rumours will keep on circulating till the time the player decides to opt out. Woods, who had been suffering several vows of his
own, ranging from personal life and a poor form, severely damaged his left knee while playing at the Players Championship. He decided to stay out of the US Open last month and also announced later that he will not be playing at the Open Championship in Sandwich.
The 35-year-old Woods is also facing lack of finances to effectively meet his costs, after several of his high profile endorsement deals took off last year. He also had to settle a thorny divorce settlement charges which are also rumoured to have cost
him $100-million.
