Tiger Woods says 2011 Aussie Open proved a turning point in his troubled career
Tiger Woods, who had been facing trouble finding his form for a long time, has now got on the winning track once again.
The American star has seen his world ranking rise to 25th, thanks to a much-needed victory in the Chevron World Challenge late last year.
However, the former world number one is keen to point out that his comeback is largely due to his performance in the 2011 Australian Open, not because of what did at the Chevron World Challenge, in December last year.
Despite what Woods thinks of his surprise comeback on the course, analysts, on the other hand, have attributed his regained momentum to his latest victory.
Woods spent over 2 years without a win, as he had to face a string of problems from s*x scandals to career-threatening injuries.
Woods participated in the Australia Open, in Sydney, in November last year. He could not break his winning drought but gained enough confidence by finishing 3rd.
"I played really well at the Open, then carried on in the Presidents Cup and basically continued that trend in the World Challenge. Hopefully I can build on that heading into this year and get ready for Augusta," the 14-time grand slam winner said.
He went on, "Australia was big. I hit so many good shots, especially when the wind was howling at 30mph, with gusts at more than that".
However, Woods could not deny that the triumph in the Chevron World Challenge came as a big surprise to him and his fans.
Best of all, he said, he managed to regain his swing speed and overcome his debilitating injuries.
"When I went into the World Challenge I was very excited that I had control of my game and it turned out that way. I really controlled my golf ball and the last two holes (he birdied them both to beat Zach Johnson) it was nice to make a couple of key putts,"
he stated.
Aussie Open proved to be a turning point in his troubled career, as Woods's world ranking saw a modest increase.
His position in the world golf had been deteriorating but due to his magic third finish he surged from the 58th to 50th.
With Abu Dhabi Golf Championship slated to begin from January 26, 2012, Woods is gearing up to continue his winning form.
