Tiger Woods secures his 76th PGA Tour title at the Cadillac Championship
Tiger Woods is finally back roaring, as he stunned his opponents at the World Golf Championships – Cadillac Championship, to record his biggest victory since 2009.
The former world number one dominated the field right from the beginning of the tournament, and did not allow anyone to surpass him on the leaderboard.
The opening round saw him sharing the lead after he carded a six-under par 66. He then surged past his rivals on the leaderboard, by carding a seven-under par 65 on day two.
In the third round, he fired another good round of 67, to enter Sunday with a massive four-stroke lead over Graeme McDowell.
He then added three birdies to his scorecard, while conceding two bogeys, in the final round, to record a two-stroke victory over Steve Stricker.
It was Woods’ 76th PGA Tour victory and 17 win in the World Golf Championships. Moreover, it is the first time in five years that Woods has managed to add two titles to his resume early in the season, before the start of the Masters Tournament.
He is now lauded as the hot favourite for the first of the four major golf championships of the season. Moreover, he can now surge back to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings by recording a victory at Bay Hill in two weeks.
Talking to the reporters after winning the tournament, the 14-time major champion expressed his pleasure in returning to his winning form.
He said: "I'm just trying to get better. It's very simple. I feel like my game's becoming more efficient, and it's more consistent day in and day out, and I'm very pleased with the progress I've made.
"The greens got really quick out there today. If you left the ball in the correct spot, though, you could be pretty aggressive and you could shoot a good number,” he added.
The world number one Rory McIlroy, in the meantime, also made a late charge on Sunday, to finish tied eighth on the leaderboard. Entering the final round, he was sharing the 30th position. However, a strong seven-under par 65 allowed him to record
a top-10 finish in the end.
