Tiger Woods seemingly on a quest to show his more human side
Even though he is a thrill to watch on the golf course, Tiger Woods has always been a bore in the press room. And
since his golf game is nowhere to be found, Woods seems to have made a conscious decision to open up to his fans and let them into his world just a bit.
Since arriving back in the U.S. after a T4 finish at the Australian Masters over the weekend, he has begun posting on his Twitter account, written a touching article for
Newsweek, and agreed to be a guest on Mike and Mike in the Morning, an ESPN radio program. He will answer questions for 30 minutes beginning on Thursday 18 November at 7:30 a.m. ET.
On Wednesday 17 November, Woods posted his first tweet, saying “What’s up everyone. Finally decided to try out twitter!” Woods has had the account since June 2009 but his previous tweets
were merely links to his various websites. And according to Yahoo! Sports, his followers went from 90,000 to 130,000 in a matter of hours, so there is clearly interest amongst fans.
On the same day, an article appeared on the
Newsweek website entitled “How I’ve Redefined Victory,” written by Woods. In it, he reflects on a tumultuous year and makes clear to readers that he has shifted the priorities in his life. Readers also get a glimpse into Woods' day-to-day life with
his children.
“I’m learning that some victories can mean smiles, not trophies, and that life’s most ordinary events can bring joy,” he wrote. “Giving my son, Charlie, a bath, for example, beats chipping
another bucket of balls. Making mac and cheese for him and his sister, Sam, is better than dining in any restaurant. Sharing a laugh watching cartoons or reading a book beats channel-surfing alone. Some nights now, it’s just me and the kids, an experience
that’s both trying and rewarding.”
Woods ends the article by writing: “I’m not the same man I was a year ago. And that’s a good thing.”
About two hours after his first tweet, Woods sent this one out: “Yep, it’s me. I think I like this twitter thing. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the love.”
Woods will need more than a couple of tweets to regain the love of his fans but he sure appears to be trying.
