Tiger Woods shocks everyone by opting out of Players Championship
For the second time in two years, Tiger Woods has chosen not to take part in the world’s richest golf tournament, The Players Championship. This time, however, Woods made the decision after his first nine holes of the tournament. Posting a horrible 6 over
42 for the first nine holes, the former World Number 1 limped off the TPC Sawgrass course.
The fourteen-time major championship winner, Woods cited multiple injuries
which he sustained at the Masters in April. The player injured his knee and
Achilles tendon due to which he didn’t even take part in the Wells Fargo
Championship. He seemed to be in form for the tournament as he was seen
on the course practicing his swing.
In an interview afterwards, Woods said that he re-injured his knee on the first tee today. The player reported that by the time he was on the ninth hole, he couldn’t walk due to intense pain in his left knee, calf and heel.
“The knee acted up and then the Achilles followed after that - and then the calf started cramping up,” said Woods.“Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction. I’m having a hard time walking. I felt fine during the warm-up and then
as I played, it progressively got worse. I’m surprised. The treatment's been good and it's been getting better - it just wasn't enough.”
The player not only shocked his fans by walking away from the tournament once again, but posting his career-worst nine holes. The 42 by Woods consisted of the player’s first ever triple bogey on the fourth hole and a bogies on the first, fifth and ninth
holes.
Even though the way he played could have been due to the injury and pain, Wood’s has given his fans something to worry about. The player said that it would have been wiser to quit earlier on but his doctors told him he could play.
Last year, Woods withdrew due to a neck injury at the seventh hole in the final round. Even though this time he left earlier on, Woods surely left people talking about the way he played.
