Tiger Woods shows his interest in becoming the US Ryder Cup team captain in future
Tiger Woods may not have performed well in any of the seven Ryder Cup appearances in the past, but he still hopes to become the US team captain someday.
Woods has a record of 13–14–2, which is not an impressive one, considering the fact that the American is regarded as one of the best players the game of golf has ever produced.
Earlier this month, Woods earned just 0.5 point for his team in the four matches that he played against the Europeans in the 2012 Ryder Cup.
It was a disastrous performance, which played a key role in the US team’s defeat against the European Ryder Cup team.
Entering the Sunday singles, the US team had a four-point lead over the Europeans. However, the European team made a strong comeback and earned 8.5 points to defeat the Americans by 14.5 to 13.5.
During the last-day matches, Woods played the final match against Francesco Molinari. The match tied in the end and both the players were rewarded with 0.5 point each.
In case Woods had won the match, he would not have stopped the Europeans to take home the Ryder Cup trophy – the defending champions retain the title in case of a tie.
However, the golf commentators believe that Woods would have at least restricted the Europeans to record the biggest comeback in the history of the biennial event, by earning the complete point in the singles match.
“I had an opportunity to earn three points in team sessions, but I did not do that. It was tough,” Woods said. “We had a four-point lead and we went 0-3. If we could have earned a couple of points, it would have been a pretty good lead going into Sunday’s
singles”.
During the week of the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final earlier this month, he said that he will try to represent and perform better in the events to come.
In the meantime, he also stated the he wants to be a US Ryder Cup team captain in future. However, he will not be opting for that in the near future.
Talking to the reporters, he told that he will not offer his name to the PGA of America Officials, until he finds his career on a verge of an end.
According to him, he should at least contribute to his team in the editions to come, in order to get some self satisfaction.
“One day that would be fantastic,” Woods told the reporters. “I would like to be able to play for a lot more teams, but certainly one day, when my career is slowing down or it’s over, it would be huge to be part of a Ryder Cup from the captaincy side”.
