Tiger Woods shuns rivalry with Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy is the undisputed world number one golfer in the world. He has claimed numerous titles on the Professional Golf Association Tour so far.
He won one major title—the PGA Championship—in the last season.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, an American golfer, has changed the course of the modern game by taking it to new heights.
With his dominance on the course, he has made a major impact on the sport. Winner of fourteen major championships during his flawless career, Woods has shunned the idea of a rivalry between himself and McIlroy.
He said that his main focus is on his game, and he is working to regain the form that kept him at the top of the golf arena for such a long time.
Woods said, “Rory McIlroy had a wonderful year, and my hat is off to him. He deserved Player of the Year. Whether we develop a rivalry remains to be seen.
“Let's just let it play out and see where it takes us. We'll look at the results the next five or 10 years and see if it becomes a rivalry or not”.
He added, “We'll have to win big events and play each other down the stretch. That hasn't happened yet. We've only played each other at Honda down the stretch. We need a lot more of those type of battles, but in bigger events”.
Woods is considered to be one of the greatest golfers to have walked on the fairways, he has accomplished more in his career than many players combined.
During the time of his dominance, Woods was at a totally different league compared to the other players on the Tour.
His bitterest rival, Phil Mickelson, was the closest in terms of record, but still fell short a long way.
Woods recently had one of the most disastrous years of his life. He received media attention for all the wrong reasons, caught in the centre of a scandal that led to the termination of his marriage. The issue had a major impact on the golfer mentally.
He took some time off to mend things with his wife, but the efforts proved to be unfruitful. After a long time away from the course, the American has come back to the sport to contend with the top golfers on the Tour.
Currently, he is not in the same form that made him the world number one at one point of his career. Still, he has exhibited some excellent golf over the season and is right behind McIlroy in terms of earnings and ranking.
McIlroy is a new phenomenon who has grabbed the limelight in the golfing arena like no one before.
Moreover, the rivalry between the two players has been shunned by Woods, but it is likely to happen at one point or the other.
