Tiger Woods stands four strokes behind the leader at the Memorial Tournament
Tiger Woods carded a two-under par 70 in the opening round of the Memorial Tournament, presented by Nationwide Insurance at the Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio to tie for the 11th position on Thursday, May 31, 2012.
It was a great start considering the fact that Woods had not been able to break the 71 mark in each of the opening rounds he played in his last three appearances on the PGA Tour.
He started his round on the back nine of the course and recorded two birdies prior to faltering in the 18th hole that caused him to suffer a double bogey.
On the front nine, he recorded another two birdies that allowed him to stand four strokes behind the leader Scott Stallings.
According to him, the course conditions were really tough and it was really difficult to record low scores.
“I think the golf course was playing quick today. The fairways were starting to chase a little bit. The greens were -- as I was explaining out there, somewhat receptive,” the 14-time major champion said. “They're making ball marks, but the thing is they're
running out. These greens have got to be near 14”.
“It's a h**l of a test out there, really. And then the wind is picking up a little bit. Hopefully we don't get too much rain, and this golf course plays quick the entire week,” he added.
Woods is now hoping to go even lower in the upcoming rounds and register a good finish in the end that will help him boost the morale prior to the US Open, scheduled two weeks from now.
For the last three tournaments, he has not been able to finish better than the 40th position, including a missed cut at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Therefore, he is desperately looking to regain his form and prove that he actually overcame the problems that he had in his swing technique.
In the meantime, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy signed their scorecards with a one-under par 71 each to share the 20th spot along with 13 other players.
