Tiger Woods takes another PGA title at the Memorial Tournament
Tiger Woods carded a five under par 67 in the final round of the Memorial Tournament to record his fifth victory at the Muirfield Village Golf Course on Sunday, June 3, 2012.
Woods started his round four strokes behind the overnight leader Spencer Levin and outshined him, with an amazing finish of three birdies on the final four holes.
Throughout the round, he looked resolute and went four-under through the first seven holes.
Thereafter, he carded two bogeys, which, again put him back three strokes away from Levin.
Meanwhile, Levin started to falter as he made a couple of bogeys followed by a double bogey that put him back to Woods on the leaderboard.
At the same time, Rory Sabbatini also made some good shots and competed with Woods till the end.
However, Woods’s final charge of birdies while Sabbatini made a bogey on the 16th hole allowed him to confirm his 73rd victory on the PGA Tour.
“Well, it's awfully special to just have won this event, and to do it here with Jack obviously there at 18, it's awfully special for us as players to have him there and to greet us after we finish. It's just so special,” he said.
“To kind of pull it off today at the end, you know, I was a few back with a few to go, and to birdie three of the last four was a nice finish. And to pull off that shot at 16, that was kind of sweet, too,” he added.
This way, he also levelled the record of second most wins on the Tour, previously held by the Memorial Tournament’s host and 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus.
He now has two victories on the PGA Tour in the 2012 season. Through this, he has now been able to silence his critics who started to believe Woods’s career ended after he had injuries and controversies in 2009.
Golf commentators believe that the win will greatly help him boost his morale, especially when the US Open is about to begin next week.
He currently has a total of 14 major wins registered with his name and he only needs four more to level Nicklaus’s record.
Therefore, if he succeeds to win the US Open this year, his chances of breaking Nicklaus’s record will surely be good once again.
