Tiger Woods takes his career earnings to over $100 million
Tiger Woods may not have won the Deutsche Bank Open but his lone third place finish meant that he took home a cheque of $544,000. This now means that Tiger Woods’ career earnings have now surpassed the staggering sum of $100 million.
Tiger may not have won the tournament, he was so close yet so far once again but all is not gloomy for the former world number one.
So far Tiger’s total career earnings are $100,350,700 and following him is Phil Mickelson, who is $30 million short.
It seems that nobody else would ever be able to surpass the $100 million due to the ever growing rise in the competence levels among the players.
Another reason is that golf courses are getting tougher and tougher day by day, so it is difficult to win tournaments frequently now.
"The purse increase helps," Woods said after a final-round 66 left him two strokes behind winner Rory McIlroy in the second week of the four-tournament FedEx Cup playoff.
Sam Snead currently leads the number of titles won on the PGA Tour but he is nowhere near Tiger Woods in terms of career earnings. This is mainly due to the fact that prize money was much lesser, almost negligible, as compared to that of today.
"I won fewer tournaments than Sam Snead has, but obviously he was in a different era. It's just that we happened to time it up right and happened to play well when the purses really had a nice spike up".
It is not just good luck of Tiger that he came in an era when the prize money was higher. In fact it was his flair and style that had brought the public interest back in the game. As a result of that, television audience increased and so did the money.
"It was nice to have a nice start to my career, and I won some majors early," he said. "I think we got some interest in the game of golf. A lot more youth, that's for sure".
This prize money tally does not include the $20 million for lifting the FedEx Cup twice plus the endorsements and sponsorships that he has had over the years.
Tiger Woods still has a very good chance to land in his third FedEx Cup title if he progresses well at the BMW Championship.
