Tiger Woods targets majors record

Former world number one Tiger Woods has put the disappointment of losing the top spot in the rankings behind him and is now focused on claiming the record for winning the most majors.

Woods has won 14 major championships to leave him four behind Jack Nicklaus in the all-time standings. He has won four Masters, three US Opens, three Opens and four PGA Championships, but has not won a major since the 2008 US Open.

He told the BBC that beating Nicklaus’ record was his ultimate goal: “It's the highest benchmark there is. It took Jack over 20 years and I haven't been playing that long. I have a lot of great years ahead of me. It's a matter of just being confident and getting
better.  No one has done better than Jack with 18. At the end of the day, hopefully I'll have more than 18 major championships. I'm only 34. Ben Hogan didn't start winning his (majors) until after my age — all nine of them — so I'm looking forward to it."

Lee Westwood took over the mantle of the world’s premier golfer on Sunday, 31 October, when he ended Woods 281-week run at the top. However, Woods could make an immediate return to the top of the rankings if he wins at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai.
'I play to win'
The American said that: "I go into every tournament to try to win. There's no sense of teeing up if you're not there to win. That's why we're all here. We don't come just to show up, we come to win golf tournaments and that has never changed."

The 34-year-old also had praise for Westwood, insisting that the Englishman deserved to be world number one despite never having won a major.

"Lee's been by far the most consistent of all the players in the majors over the last two years. He hasn't won one but he's come so close. It's just a matter of time.”
