Tiger Woods the early leader at Barclays
For much of 2010 Tiger Woods has been a joke off the course and a disaster on it, but Woods is nothing if not tenacious.
Just days after the announcement of his divorce from wife Elin, the world No. 1 has returned to a place he hasn't been near in months - and we're not talking about the casino. It's early days, but Tiger is currently top of the leaderboard.
At the Barclays tournament in Ridgewood Country Club, New Jersey, Woods leads the field after a 7.00am start, holding a clubhouse lead of six-under-par 65 comprised of seven birdies and a bogey on the 12th. Woods' driving accuracy is 93% after that first round - that's the best of any player on the course, and substantially better than the 14-time major winner has managed in recent outings.
The 34-year-old is currently being pursued by Vaughn Taylor, Ryan Palmer and Brian g*y, all on five under, though none of those players is yet to complete his round.
More than half the field is yet to start, though of the bigger names already in action Steve Stricker is two-under after 15 holes, Luke Donald is one-under after 12, and Anthony Kim and Ernie Els both two-over after 14 and 13 holes respectively.
It's a little soon to get too excited of course, but right now it's looking like the official break from Elin really could prove to be the catalyst that turns around Woods' awful year. But perhaps we should see where the guy finishes on Sunday before we get too carried away.
