Tiger Woods three strokes off the pace after the first round
Tiger Woods could not shoot a low round on Thursday at Sherwood Golf and Country Club. The former world number one is currently three shots adrift of the leader, Nick Watney, who leads the 2012 World Golf Challenge by two strokes.
Woods shot an average round of two-under, 70, on a day where conditions were not that easy to play golf. There were overcast conditions on Thursday, which did not help the players much.
Nevertheless, it is a decent start of the tournament for Woods. He will definitely improve as the tournament progresses.
World Golf Challenge is hosted by Tiger Woods Foundation and, being the defending champion, it is certain that the current world number three will make progress over the next few days.
Five times World Golf Challenge champion, Woods could not shoot a bogey-free round. This must have been disappointing, as a flawless round always give a bit of confidence.
He started beautifully, carding a birdie right on the second hole but a stretch of pars followed by a bogey meant that he was even par after the first nine holes.
Tiger posted two birdies on the back nine to finish off his round with a score of 70.
The fourteen-time major winner was not hitting the ball as well as he would have like to. At the Pro-Am, he was hitting extremely well but, maybe due to the conditions, he was just not in his groove.
"I didn't hit it very good today, so it was nice to scrape out a good score," Woods told the reporters.
"I made a few good par putts to keep the round going. I kept myself in the tournament. Could have easily shot myself out of the tournament but I kept myself in it".
The 36-year-old said that he was not feeling well while warming up and he knew something was not right.
"Even warming up I didn't quite feel it was where I needed to have it. I had it last night when I was hitting golf balls, and that was nice”, said five time tournament champion.
"Unfortunately I just didn't have it like I did last night. I'll do some work here and hopefully shore it up for tomorrow".
