Tiger Woods to miss the Wells Fargo Championship - Golf news
Tiger Woods will miss the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship, owing to a minor knee injury, which he sustained in the third round of the 2011 Masters.
The news was confirmed by the former World Number one via his official website. He wrote, "I personally contacted tournament officials and expressed my regret in not being able to play. This is an outstanding event, but I must follow doctors’ orders to get
better."
According to the website, the 35-year-old met with a Grade 1 mild injury to his left knee and Achilles tendon while hitting a shot on the fairway of 17th hole during the third round of the Masters. The doctors examined the injured player after
the tournament and advised him to rest, cold-weather therapy and soft-tissue treatment for a quick recovery.
Strangely, the injured player heard their pleas and decided to act upon them. In order to do so, he called the tournament director Kym Houghman personally and apologised for opting out of the event.
Houghman verified the phone call in front of the press on Tuesday. He said, “Tiger’s absence is unfortunate but Tiger called personally and I thought that was incredibly gracious of him. We had a nice conversation and he said he loves the tournament, loves
the feel of it and the way the community embraces the event but he’s going to have to miss it.”
In response to the news broken by Houghman and the website, the press asked Woods whether he would play in the Players Championship, which is the fifth flagship event on the Professional Golf Association tour. In the answer to the query, Woods’ agent, Mark
Steinberg, replied that although the injury was minor, Woods was listening to his physicians to avoid some major trouble in the future. He also added that his client would re-evaluate the physical conditions for the upcoming week in which the Players Championship
would take place, as he was looking forward to play in it.
Woods sustained a similar injury in 2008 US Open, when he sprained his left knee with a torn ligament and it turned it into a fracture. The problem was so severe that the veteran had to call off all his commitments for the rest of the season to recuperate.
