Tiger Woods to play in the Fall Series to work his way up the President’s Cup
The ailing Tiger Woods will be playing a PGA Tour event to work his way up for the President's Cup, scheduled later in the season. In other words Woods will be working on Captain Fred Couples’ advice to perform better in order to be selected for the cup
on merit rather than leaning on his recommendation.
Woods who failed to qualify for the FedExCup Playoffs this week starting from the Barclays, have shown his willingness to play at the President’s Cup time and again and with his current form, is heavily dependent on Couples decision to pull him along.
Couples, who will be leading the American team at this year’s cup, has been a close associate of Woods for nearly a decade but has been facing severe criticism from golf critics for selecting Woods despite of his worrying form, especially in times when the
American contingent has been given a run for their money in the sport.
Many of the young golfers on the PGA Tour have won one or two events in the year and are serious contenders for a slot in the President’s Cup team, better qualified than Woods in their current form.
“I've had some conversations with U.S. captain Fred Couples, and we'll see how it goes,” Woods said. “Of course, I want to be on the team. It's always fun to play for your country, and we did pretty well two years ago in San Francisco. I'm just going to
keep practicing and try to get better. It's Freddie's call, and he can make any choice he wants.”
Woods might add an event on his schedule and would drop in to play at the Fall Series starting from September, 29 in Los Vegas. It will be followed by the Frys.com Open at San Martin, California, the McGladrey Classic in St. Simons Island, Georgia and will
conclude with the final episode of the series in Disney in October. Woods will be hoping to start afresh at the Las Vegas where he won his first PGA Tour victory in 1996. He also went over to win Disney the same year.
Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship for the fourth time in his professional career has now dropped out of the top-125 in the FedExCup Rankings, thus failing to qualify for the lucrative string of Playoff events on this year’s calendar.
Couples, for the moment has given clear signal that he will be pulling Tiger on the team but has also laid out terms and conditions for the 14-major-winner.
“He can't just show up the week before in Australia. I need him to play more than just there,” said Couples, who reportedly also talked to Woods agent Mark Steinberg to arrange a couple of events in the Fall Series.
