Tiger Woods to return to Firestone for Bridgestone Invitational?
According to The Guardian UK, Tiger Woods is expected to return to the Bridgestone Invitational, which will take place at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio from August 4 to 7, 2011.
Woods is expected to make an announcement this week that he is ready to make a comeback in the European Tour event. Prior to that, the former world number one has time until Friday 5 pm, to register for the tournament.
The 35-year-old pro, who has fallen out of the Top 20 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), has been out of competitive golf since the Players Championship, owing to his lingering knee injury. The former world number one strained his ankle during the
final round of the Masters, which resulted in the recurrence of the problem he once had in 2009. The sore ankle forced the veteran out of the Players Championship and made him withdraw from the US Open and the Open Championship.
However, according to speculations, the American will play in the last of the four-legged World Golf Championships to avoid a further fall on the OWGR.
Woods’ last visit to Firestone Country Club was a year back, when he was facing the toughest period of his career; he was on the brink of a divorce, he was being bombarded with criticism by the media for his questionable acts and he had lost his swing. At
that moment, he competed in the Bridgestone Invitational and finished at the 78th spot.
The seven-time winner of the Bridgestone Invitational could not break par in any of the four rounds. He stumbled on the fairways, missed the greens and saw his par-putts turn into bogeys. Despite that, he holds the lowest aggregate in the history of the
tournament; 21-under-par after 28 rounds.
Woods is thinking of returning to the rolling fairways of Firestone, but with a slight change. This time, he won’t have the company of his long-time caddie, Steve Williams, whom he dumped this week, due to some undisclosed reasons.
So the question is; who will carry the bag for Woods at Firestone and who will motivate the veteran to find his lost fire?
