Tiger Woods will “Make it Matter” after the Masters – Golf update
Tiger Woods, as part of the contract with the sporting giant Nike, will be touring China and South Korea for a golf promotional campaign, right after the Masters in April. The tour is part of the “Make it Matter” series from Nike which vows to illuminate
the sport in Asian countries, especially China.
The burgeoning Chinese population offers a lucrative market for the brand and it has been running this event for the last ten years. The tour will include Woods coaching sessions for the young budding golfers who will receive precious tips from the 14 times
major winner himself. The first stop on the tour is the Mission Hills Golf Club in southern city of Shenzhen in China from 11th and 12th April. Woods last visited the venue almost ten years ago and his appearance gave the much needed
boost to the sport’s popularity in the region.
Tenniel Chu, the vice chairman of the Mission Golf Club, spoke on the occasion and said, "We warmly welcome the return of Tiger Woods. Ten years ago, his visit was an important milestone for the golf community in China, We hope Tiger Woods' strong appeal
will attract more enthusiasts into the game of golf, especially among our younger athletes,"
Woods previous visits resulted in an increase in the popularity of the sport. Two of the young Chinese golfers Han Ren and Feng Yue who had a chance to play with Woods, later became the leading golfers for the country at the Amateur level. The Mission Hills
Golf Course, as part of the campaign, will also host a Nike Golf Junior Championship, where 120 junior golfers will eagerly compete to be successful and win a chance to meet Woods in person. The participant’s age limit is set from 12 to 18 years.
The tour, however, might not be among the priorities on Woods’ mind. The former World Number one is struggling to regain his form for a while now and has faced scathing criticism for his extramarital affairs which he admitted to later on and apologized.
He is without a win for almost a year and has now suffered 20 consecutive losses. Woods has been desperately working on his form and his new swing which he has been able to develop with the help of his new Coach Sean Foley.
Currently ranked at five in the World Rankings, Woods showed some signs of recovery when he finished 66 at Doral and an amazing 8-under par for 64 in Tavistock drawing some speculation that Woods will bounce back at the Arnold Palmer Invitational being played
at Bay Hill Golf Club and Lodge, something which never happened. The Masters at Augusta National is the first of four majors of the year scheduled to tee off next week.
