Tiger Woods’s struggling form continues at the second day of President’s Cup
While the sturdy American Team has managed to extend their lead in the second day of the President’s Cup, Tiger Woods is still lurking in obscurity and up till now, has failed to meet the expectations of Captain Fred Couples. Paired with Dustin Johnson in
the Four-Ball session on the second day, Woods was able to card just one birdie in the whole day.
International Team duo Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day finished the round, 1-up against a struggling American Team, scoring a precious point for the International Team on the leaderboard, which though is still trailing the American Team.
“This means a lot, “Baddeley said. “I was very disappointed yesterday. I felt like I really let Jason down. He played great yesterday. So it was nice to come through today and make a good putt on the last there to win.”
Baddeley carded five birdies against Day’s only one, to guide the team to the top after a tough battle between the two teams. Pulling in two consecutive birdies on the second and third holes, Baddeley carded another at the fifth before dropping a shot at
par-four, 6th. He pulled in two more before closing the round as Day settled with just one birdie to contain the American Team. Day admitted that he rather watched Baddeley pull in birdies all day.
Woods, who was part of the unbeaten pair in 2009 at Harding Park alongside Steve Stricker, again failed to make an impression on the second day while Stricker who was playing alongside Matt Kuchar on the second day, carded two birdies to win his round.
“(We were) just trying to hit the greens – that’s a heck of an accomplishment today,’ Woods said. “The balls oscillating on the greens, and you had to play the wind on putts.”
The excuse, however, will certainly not go down well with Captain Couples. He has faced scathing criticism of picking up Woods for the team and his lacklustre performance will surely take a toll on Couples’ credibility.
Americans, who have suffered just one defeat in the 17 years history of the event, are now leading the tournament by 7-5 at the end of the second day.
