  1. The majors are different now than they were then.

Jones won the US Amateur, the US Open, the British Amateur and the British Open Championship in a single calendar year.

The concept of the modern majors was suggested by Arnold Palmer to Pittsburgh Sports writer Bob Drum in 1960. On an airplane to the British Open, Palmer suggested that a combination of the Masters, the US Open, the British Open Championship and the PGA Championship better represented the Majors than the ones Jones had played in.

So you can't really compare the two.

  2. This is like comparing Ruth to Bonds, Bobby Jones Slam was pretty d**n special his competition was what it was, Tiger Woods was pretty d**n special also were comparing apples to oranges.  Compare the equipment from today to yesteryear,  the travel from then to now they are bot incredible feats that we will all remember for years to come.

  3. YES Jones did this feat in a single year and he was an AMATEUR.

  4. It is interesting to note the difference between ametuer and pro, then and now. Back then the ametuers where professional calibur players that had professional jobs like Bobby Jones was a lawyer. Others were doctors and such. So they only played during the summer.

Professional golfers were looked down upon because that was all they did was play golf, give lessons, and caddie for big wigs. They were never a part of society, and certainly not celebrities, like they are today.

So to say that Bobby Jones was an ametuer when he accomplished his big wins is a bit out of context until you realize the way things were back then.

  5. Yes.  Bobby Jones is the only one to do it in one year.

  6. Both were amazing feats.

Bobby did in a time when golfers did not play year round, it was one of the finest accomplishments in sports history

Tiger created the Tiger slam.  The fact that he could put the trophy's of all four majors on his coffee table at once is also one of the finest moments in sport.

Doing it in one calendar year, well Bobby did that.

We are fortunate enough to watch Tiger and see if he will do it in one calender year.  This year could be the year

  7. you cannot say tiger is better then jones because of the competition now jones would be far better then him. if jones had todays technology he would dominate todays game

jones best player to eva live

  8. Having read the excellent book "Grand Slam" I think Jones' record was more impressive than woods.  He won the grand slam (no one had coined the phrase until then - no one had even considered the possibility) against huge odds.

Remember two of them were match play events.  And in the stroke play events after the cut, or qualifying, all the players started from scratch again, the pre cut scores were ignored.  Jones also won with wooden shafts, when most other golfers had switched to steel.

  9. He did it in a calendar year, but at that time only two of the four were professional majors.

  10. Hard to compare eras.  Both feats were mind-boggling, but I'd give the edge to Tiger because of the level of competition, and the extra pressure you get from the increased exposure in today's world.

  11. Bobby Jones won the 'Slam', Tiger did not.  That having been said, Tigers 'slam' was far a far greater accomplishment because the level of competition today is so much greater.  The 'Tiger Slam' is the greatest sporting accomplishment of my lifetime in my opinion.

  12. I believe so.  The Majors were different then, they were the US and British Opens, and US and British Ametuers.  The fact that he did this all in one year is the most impressive feat ever recorded in Golf history.  I bet Tiger will do it before his career is over though.
