Tigers’ assistant GM Al Avila will remain in Detroit – MLB News
The Detroit Tigers assistant GM Al Avila has denied all speculations regarding his linkage with some other teams in Major League Baseball for a potential General Manager position. He spoke in the media on Tuesday and tried to clear his stance on his current
job and explained his very healthy relationship with the Tigers’ top management.
Avila said, “I have a tremendous relationship with ownership and I've known Dave for 20 years, we have no problems. We work very well together.”
Avila, who was recently denied permission to meet with the Los Angeles Angels and New York Mets’ organisations for a potential superior job, never made any public comments and is still happy to be at his current job.
The Tigers’ general manager Dombrowski has also stated and assured that his assistant is not leaving and instead he is very happy with Detroit at the moment.
Dombrowski said, “It's very simple, When Al negotiated his deal, he agreed to stay here and gave up his ability to interview for other GM jobs. It's a combination of things — I don't want to get into too many particulars — but they were mutually agreed upon
and they're part of the total arrangement made. It wasn't a demand of either side's.”
This is not the first time that Avila faced these kinds of speculations in the media regarding his linkage with other MLB teams who are willing to appoint him as GM. The Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks have also
tried in the past to bring Avila into their franchises.
On Tuesday, some reporters also asked Avila how he remembered those very interviews with the Mariners and Diamondbacks back in 2003 and 2005 for a potential GM position in their organisations. Avila replied boldly and stated that he never intended to be
their GM and in the future, his perceptions will never change. He further went on to comment that he is currently focusing at the next season for better results.
According to Avila’s contract with the Detroit Tigers, he will remain in-charge and assisting Dombrowski until 2015.
