Tigers should not trade their younger prospects for Matt Garza - MLB Update
Last season, Chicago Cubs were unable to achieve decent results in Major League Baseball. General Manager, Theo Epstein is doing what any clever GM is supposed to do as he has now decided to trade the older and more expensive players, in exchange for young talented individuals, who can let him succeed in his rebuilding project.
Undoubtedly, Epstein is looking to trade Matt Garza to the Tigers, in exchange for the Tigers’ leading pitching prospect, Jacob Turner or top hitter, Nick Castellanos. Jacob Turner produced match winning performances in 2011 season and he can be an asset to any team on the mound. Castellanos, on the other hand, has the ability to bat under immense pressure and he has led the Tigers to memorable wins in Major League Baseball.
On paper, trading these two young players in a pricey package featuring Garza or Gonzalez wouldn’t make any sense at all to the Tigers. Unless, they get an irresistible offer in return, the Tigers should avoid this trade in all circumstances.
In an interview last week, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski has already made it very clear that Turner will not be available for any trade. When Epstien called up Dambrowski last week, he wanted to discuss the possibility of trading Gaza for Turner but Dombrowski forcefully said that Garza-Turner deal was a no go.
But Matt Garza says he has no time to think about the trade talks and he is hoping to be more consistent and reliable to earn a huge pay day at the end of next season.
"I really don't pay attention to [trade talk]," Garza said Friday at the Cubs Convention in Chicago. "It's my job to get ready and be in shape for spring training. But that's all I've been focused on. So if I get a phone call [about a trade] -- and I've got them before -- so be it. It happens. At this point I'm excited to stay here. But if it happens, it happens."
The Tigers have real problems to sort out before the spring training session starts next month. They certainly need a fifth starter to add more variety to their pitching line-up. But to achieve short term success, they should not be looking to trade their younger and brighter prospects. Jim Leyland will be aware of the problems the Tigers are facing right now and he should come up with a decent plan to build a team that could reach the post season.
