Question:

Tight eye patch/sleep mask?

I am looking for a sleeping mask that doubles as a pair of tight eye patches to cover both eyes at night and restrict my eye movement, as I suffer from recurrent corneal erosions. At the moment I tape my eyes down with surgical tape and it's not a good look.

  1. Corneal erosions stem from a weak basement membrane at the base of the cornea.  The surface cells dry out when we sleep and slough off of the basement membrane when we open our eyes.  You may have already tried this, but keeping them moist with an ointment such as Refresh PM may keep them from sloughing off.  Genteal gel is another alternative.  Theses are over-the-counter preparations that can be bought in the drugstore or grocery store.  Both are goopy and need to be washed away in the morning, but they may help in reducing the erosions.  Patching or taping the eyes closed also help to keep the moisture in.  Of course, you can do the ointments and patching at the same time.  In the worse cases...those that recur, there are procedures that can be done to strengthen the basement membrane such as stromal puncture or lamellar keratoplasty.  Talk to your eye care provider if you fall into the latter category.

  2. Tranquileyes! It's a complete life-saver. They both press down on the eyelids and prevent incomplete closure AND allow you to moisten the pads, creating a far less drying environment. I personally own the 'tranquileyes chronic dry eye' kit, and much prefer it to the other methods of nighttime protection I've tried (tape, snug masks, children's occluding patches, eye-surgery goggles...)
