  1. yes you can but get the right thinset for that job

as long as the floor is solid

  2. Subfloor should be at least 3/4" thick for the floor to keep from "flexing", (causes your tile and grout to crack). Best "subfloor" for tile is concrete or solid 3/4" plywood.

  3. I TILE, every day of my life,  and I also answer a lot of CAN I?   questions here. The answer will always be YES. The consequences may be less than what you want however.

WHY,,, first of all are you even considering thinset as anything but in using it to set the tile?

Beyond that, why not,,,especially if the floor is level, install concrete backer board, which is apppropriate, over ANY other substrate, then thinset, tile, and you'd be good to go.

IF in fact the substrate isn't level,,,THIN G SET is NOT what you should use as a leveler, and it has absolutely no qualities as a substance applied between two different substrates.

I'm not trying to offend you, but your question reminds me of so many who may be clueless, and wondering where they get their initial info?

    Just my two "sense"

  4. You need a sturdy surface to put tile on.  Place a cement board recommended for wood sub-floors and secure it per the recommendations.  You then can put thin set and the tiles on this sub floor, other wise the tiles can crack and break.

    See our web site http://www.ourhomeimprovement.net/bathro...

  5. Just put down your hardi board then your thinset and tile. You need to make sure your floor doesn't have any spring in it so if it's a old weak floor you may need to lay subfloor first.

  6. doesn't matter, ply wood would save your money.
