I love my hardwood floors but I have 5 dogs that I love more. My home is on piers about 3 ft off the ground. I would like to put down tile, what do I put down first? And will it mess up my original hard wood floors. Any advice will be appreciative.

  1. I wanted to do this once - pier & beam house built in 1927, my tile guy said no.

  2. I would not do it. Will not last and will kill the wood under it.

You can get a laminate tile. Like laminate hardwood flooring but looks like tiles. Will not damage the floor and can keep the dogs.

  3. yes u can lay tile on a pier construction house....have the span and size of joist checked and u have to put down a backer board and yes it will damage the hardwood....check on the new floating floor that looks like tile......

    lic. gen. contractor

  4. I would probably do what bammer has suggested!!! because you will ruin the floor otherwise!!! or else put down a good polyurethane covering your wood floors to make them look good and be durable.... with a few area rugs for the pups to have a bit of traction..

  5. Best way is to glue it onto the floorboards, but the glue will mark the old floor boards. You could tack them down instead.

  6. Are you wanting a ceramic tile or a laminate?  Check with an expert first before doing anything that could damage the hardwood underneath.  Some ceramics are too heavy and could cause problems.

  7. Have you thought about getting some cheaper cover rugs and replace them after worn, Just a suggestion.
